Being a victim of this traumatic problem myself, I understand the problems with panic attacks during driving and the outrageous effect which they can have. One of these life-threatening experiences can put you off driving for a number of months or possibly even years. No-one can say when you will get panic/anxiety attack or how it will affect you, So, I have decided to compile 7 ways in which you can put an end to any overwhelming fear of panic attacks whilst driving.
1) Don't focus on driving.
Anxiety overtakes a body when the person is focusing on their own fear. So, try to distract yourself by looking out of the window at some scenery or, roadwork's etc...
2) Play Some Relaxation Music.
Most people will argue that relaxation music is not of their kind and just causes them even more panic. If that is the case, then play music which you like and adore. Try singing out loud or doing some light dancing while you're at the wheel.
3) Stay away from motorways.
The busy roads, fast cars and fats-moving highway traffic add to your heartbeat which is not a good prospect for someone who is suffering from severe anxiety attacks. Simply stay off normal roads, it may take longer; however, which is better, a long soothing journey or a fast, painful and weary journey full of sweat, horror and overwhelming fear?
4) Eat something you like
Again, this something to transfer your concentration onto something else. Because, when you're not thinking about anything you think about yourself, which is not what you want if you are suffering form panic attacks. I usually go through a full pack of polo mints on a journey but, at least it gets me there.
5) Pull Over and take a break.
The first sign of a panic attack is increased amount of heartbeats. So, if you experience this then, simply jump out of the car, walk around for a little while take a long deep breath then, carry on.
6) Keep a brown paper bag in the car
Just in case of hyperventilation it will help you to breath in an emergency.
7) Don't try to fight against it!
Panic/Anxiety attacks WILL go after a little while there is no reason why you should try to do anything out of the normal. Just stop the car, get out and sit on a bench or something until it's over with.
I hope that the seven steps motioned above can help you as they have helped me STOP my panic attacks which I was suffering from in high school. Basically, if you can stay calm at all times and reduce any "rush sensations" you should be fine.
