A screensaver refers to a kind of computer program, which have been initially designed for preventing phosphor burn-in on the CRT as well as plasma computer monitors. It does so, by blanking the screen as well as filling it with various moving patterns or images when the computer isn’t in use. Modern-day screensavers are primarily used for security or entertainment. Before the arrival of LCD screens, majority of computer screens used to be based on the cathode ray tubes. When the same image gets displayed on the CRT screen for a long time, the properties in the exposed area of the phosphor coating inside the screen gradually as well as permanently change. This eventually leads to appearance of a darkened shadow on the screen. Such images are often referred to as ghost images. As it is, oscilloscopes, cathode ray televisions, as well as other similar devices which use CRTs are all exposed to phosphor burn-in, apart from plasma displays to a large extent. In order to help avoid such effects by automatically altering the images on the computer screen during the periods of user inactivity, screensaver programs were designed.
Monitors which run screensavers use the same amount of electricity as while running normally. This may range from a few watts for smaller LCD monitors to hundreds of watts for larger plasma displays. Most of the modern computers may be set into switching the monitor to a low power mode, or blanking the screen completely. Power saving mode for the monitors is generally a part of power management options that are supported in most of the modern operating systems, although it should be supported by the hardware of the computer and monitor as well.
Wallpapers on the other hand refer to the images that are used as background on the computer screens, generally for the desktop of the graphical user interface. Also referred to as desktop picture or desktop background, Wallpaper was initially a term that was used in Microsoft Windows. However, these days, the term is universally used. Images that used as computer wallpapers are generally raster graphics with similar size as that of the display resolution for filling the whole background.
These days, Digital 3D wallpapers have become quite popular. As it is, Digital 3D wallpaper refers to a work of digital art, which gets displayed on the computer desktop, as background for home screen. The excellence of digital 3D wallpaper lies in the fact, that you may change it just with a simple click of your computer mouse. Digital 3D wallpapers are not 3D in the strictest sense. They are only designed in a way to appear as if they are 3D images by making use of perspective. In case you do not prefer digital 3D wallpapers, then you will be glad to know that there are several other non-3D options that you can choose from. For wallpapers, you may also use your own photos. It would also be a good idea to use your family photos, or simply a collection of your family photos. You may also update them with latest photos.
